ABIGAIL

“Sure.”

Seemingly lost in thought, Liam stood over the piano and ran a hand over the keys, caressing them. The energy he was giving off gave her chills: he hadn’t even started playing, and somehow the sound was still moving. Then, as though awakening from a trance, he sat down and began to play.

Abbie had never thought of herself as the sentimental type—well, mostly; she always had to turn away so Emily wouldn’t see her tearing up during Lion King—but the moment Liam started the song, she was done for. The lyrics were those of a broken man lamenting his lost love. At each tiny pause he’d written into the music, Abbie felt like she could breathe again, but then he pulled her even deeper into his emotional maelstrom.

The silence left behind when he finished the song was deafening. Abbie excused herself and hurried to her bathroom; she didn’t have to look in the mirror to know that her make-up was ruined.

It’s only a song!

Was it? Was it just a song? Or was it more than that?

“When you dance, you have to feel the music deep within yourself. Only when you allow yourself those emotions can you convey them to the outside world—and that’s when your dance comes alive. Don’t try to fake your emotions; the audience can sense these things.”

She heard Aunt Anna’s voice as clearly as if she were standing beside her in the bathroom. Anna’s dancing had always given Abbie goosebumps. But Liam’s song was different. It had felt like being pushed into a tornado, with no control over her feelings whatsoever.

Abbie wiped her face clean and redid her makeup. A grappa would be just the thing right now… and lots of dessert. She returned to the room and found it empty. Had he left without saying goodbye? But then she heard the sink running in the guest bathroom, and exhaled in relief. She had exactly zero time for guys who ran off.

Liam looked bashful when he returned from the bathroom.

“I was thinking maybe we could do with something stronger.” She sat down, uncorked a narrow bottle, and poured two extra-large shots.

“Good call.”

“Cheers!” They tossed back their shots and shuddered in unison. “I’ll cut, you choose.” As Abbie busied herself with the cake, the weird feeling that had come over her during the song began to fade. “You can tell me about all of that if you want to. I didn’t really keep up with it—Emily was just a baby, so I was too busy not sleeping, trying not to lose my job, and fighting with my ex.”

“Another time, maybe. Were you married?”

“No. We were super young when we first got together, and the success Kyle had as a commercial filmmaker changed him… like, he suddenly thought the goals we’d had before were old-fashion. He saw how much fun his new friends were having in the fast lane… it was only a matter of time until he decided that he was better off alone. Well, alone with all the people he was cheating on me with.
